Reflective material is not visible on recently installed safety posts

Two weeks ago, reflective poles were installed at the Gunāra Astras Street pedestrian crossing. This has been done with the aim of improving traffic safety, however, Sanita from Riga questions their effectiveness, because without seeing the poles in the dark, the program “Bez Tabu” reports.

The poles installed only two weeks ago no longer show reflective material, which means that during the dark hours of the day, the poles do not improve, but worsen the situation on the road. Sanita from Riga reported that there was an accident in this place a week ago – the car ran into one of the poles.

The Department of Transportation noted that this is a traffic calming measure – drivers are forced to reduce speed and be more careful near pedestrian crossings. But will these invisible poles ensure road safety?

To which Austris Keišs, a representative of the Riga City Council Traffic Department, replies:

Reflective material is not visible on recently installed safety posts

If there is a lot of traffic and congestion, this is a sign that this is not the right solution and a traffic light should be installed instead of narrowing the carriageway. If these reflectors are gone, the effect is quite the opposite. We are not improving traffic and fixing this issue, but we are creating additional risks. If the driver does not notice this bar in time, seeing it at the last minute, what will he do? Will try to rearrange quickly. This is a very significant traffic hazard due to the risk of a car collision.

Oskars Irbitis, traffic safety expert

The department points out that the material of the posts and the reflective adhesive film are of the same quality everywhere, only the color differs – others are orange, others red. In turn, the posts of Gunāra Astras Street will be restored in the next three days!
