Reflections on the Game in Thessaloniki and the Future of Dynamo Kyiv

The game in Thessaloniki left a depressing impression. The defeat from Aris did not become a tragedy. Everything can be fixed in Bucharest. I am very skeptical about the Conference League in general. In the current environment, this is more cost than income. A tournament that is not really needed by clubs from the leading championships. Last season, I did not see a single match of this tournament.

The tragedy was the quality of football demonstrated by the people of Kiev in Greece. the opponent had an advantage thanks to the pressure. Against the backdrop of the fifth team of the Greek championship last season, Dynamo did not look convincing at all. The coaching duel was lost. The opponent with understanding approached the weak and strong (Shaparenko did not play the best match) places of Kiev. If the modest “Aris” did this with the team of Mircea Lucescu, then what will happen against the background of stronger rivals? For example, “Besiktas”, where the organization of the game and the level of players is clearly higher.

Some might say that there is no need to jump to conclusions. At one time, they were in the balance with a very low-level team Drogheda, and then they beat Spartak, reached the semi-finals of the Europa League and won the championship. In the late 90s, there were very difficult and inexpressive matches with Sparta, and then the Champions League semi-finals. Patience is a very important trait in football.

But now the question is a little different – the coach of the Lucescu team has been in a crisis period for almost a year. Has no lift. The team failed last season in European cups and the championship. Old problems are not being solved. There is not much difference between today’s Dynamo and the autumn 2022 team.

Someone will say that the problem is not in the coach, but in the players. War, good legionnaires do not want to go, there is no money for transfers. I do not agree with this wording. By today’s standards, the people of Kiev have a good squad. Perhaps the names are not so loud. There are almost no legionnaires, which should make the team as strong as possible from the inside. Everyone speaks the same language, culture and way of life are common. Eight players of the Ukrainian national team – Bushchan, Tymchik, Sidorchuk, Buyalsky, Yarmolenko, Vanat, Shaparenko. Close to this status is Karavaev. 5 players who reached the semi-finals at the youth Euro this summer are Neshcheret, Sirota, Vivcharenko, Brazhko, Vanat. “Aris” or “Besiktas” will not be able to boast of such a status of players. The youth of these countries did not go to any Euro. National teams are also clearly not stronger than Ukraine. The current squad is unlikely to succeed in the Champions League, but for the Europa League/Conference League or success in the UPL, it is more than enough.

Before the return of Valery Lobanovsky, Dynamo was not very impressive. I remember a little the last match in 1996 against Dnipro, when we lost 0:2, but managed to snatch a 2:2 draw… Then they also said that the team was frankly weak, new players were needed. Valeriy Vasilievich with the same line-up made a lot of noise in the Champions League very quickly. Especially for Barcelona.

In 2020, Dynamo, only by a great miracle, took second place. The team was completely unbalanced with big problems in defense. The new coach Mircea Lucescu did not change anything in terms of personnel and was able to bring the Kiev team to the Champions League and return all domestic titles. The approach to the players has changed. Game organization. Nobody knew about Ilya Zabarny. Nikolai Shaparenko was not the right player. Both became top players. If Lucescu had not come then, perhaps no one would have remembered these players now.

Lucescu’s methods worked for one season. Then everything returned to its place. Failures in defense began when Zabarny was on the team. The team, at best, has been standing still for a long time, not moving forward. From the positive for the last – the progress of Vladislav Vanat and the full transition from youth to adult football Konstantin Vivcharenko.

I don’t think that even if we manage to sign a new strong central defender, this will change something globally. For some changes, 3-4 players are needed. Everyone understands that in the current political and economic circumstances this is impossible. No one will come here of high quality, even for big money. Perhaps then a new coach is needed, who will take a different look at the existing squad, at the organization of the game?

Why did Shakhtar become champions last season? If there was Roberto De Zerbi, it would be a failure. Because the Italian coach would like the quality of the game without the composition and teamwork. Igor Jovichevich came and simplified the game, gave the team emotions. What was needed the most. Marian Shved did not play for a long time, and in the first game for Shakhtar he scored a double in the Champions League. What kind of physics, tactics can be here? Only emotions. In the summer of 2022, Jovićević was the most suitable mentor for the then Shakhtar squad. The owner of the club wanted more in the summer, so he went to change coaches.

It is said that Samba Diallo is not ready for senior football, because he is a player for space, without physical struggle and without the desire to work for defense. Is Misha Mudrik different? De Zerbi found an approach to him, got through. The result was not long in coming. Gio Tsitaishvili, Artem Shulyansky, Vikenty Voloshin are not untalented guys. They lacked coaching. In terms of potential, they were good players.

Lucescu is a very conservative coach. He will not deviate from his principles. In the modern coordinate system of Ukrainian football, it can hardly be effective. The situation in the case of Sidorchuk-Brazhko confirms this. The first is already age-related and is not always effective. The second is young and has interest from clubs from the leading championships. The coach prefers Sidorchuk…. Substitutions in Thessaloniki after the 80th minute, when it was necessary to win back, to freshen up the game

In the spring, something began to work out for Alexander Shovkovsky. It turned out that Kahim Perris is pretty good at playing football. Although before that he was in a big ignore. The team stopped suffering and the field, and again began to be seen some kind of self-confidence. It seemed that Shovkovsky could try. He needs to strengthen the headquarters a little with a good foreign specialist in tactics so that there are no such violence as from Chernomorets in Kyiv. It would hardly be worse than now. No one will give guarantees that in a year Alexander Vladimirovich will not sit out, or will not burn out.

In Poland, Marek Papshun made the team of the not so big city of Częstochowa the champion. Not only by the result, but also by the game. No big money. Making progress with the players and skillfully conducting selection. Our Vladislav Kochergin became one of the team leaders there. Now he scores in the Champions League qualification. It is unlikely that this player can be compared in terms of potential with the people of Kiev Shaparenko or Brazhko. Papshun is not interested in money (or not only money), he wants opportunities – to play in the Champions League, or LE. Build a new project. Lead a team with the appropriate infrastructure, the Academy.

I don’t understand why not act proactively? Why is it necessary to go into a deep crisis in order to make some changes later? Today, everything looks very much like Lucescu will not be able to give anything new to this team. I understand that Mircea wants to leave as a winner. But these are the ambitions of an exclusively Romanian coach. Dynamo has its own interests. Not only the result, but I am the development of players and the emergence of youth. Of all the three components, Mircea can, by coincidence, only cope with the first if he wins the UPL.

Someone will say that Sergei Tishchenko changed his shoes. Not so long ago, he wrote that Dynamo was winning the championship, and now he is in despair after losing to Aris. I don’t back down from my words. The chances of winning the championship are high. The main reason is not the strength of Dynamo, but the problems of the opponents. “Dawn” and “Dnepr-1” can already be slowly discarded. Shakhtar are not absolutely convincing yet. A new team is being built. No one can guarantee that something will come of it. Add to this an increase in attacking potential thanks to the return of Andriy Yarmolenko. Therefore, the chances of winning first place are high despite all the problems. But this is the result without development. Competitors will regain strength, and everything will be in place again.
