Reflections on 80s Malayalam Cinema and the Impact of Film Criticism

Thiruvananthapuram – Producer Suresh Kumar said that he does not object to film criticism with a blind eye and is opposed to reactions that insult individuals. Suresh Kumar was speaking with director Kamal and actor Maniyanpilla Raju on the topic of ’80s Malayalam Cinema’ at the ‘Smriti Sandhya’ organized as part of the Assembly International Book Festival. He also pointed out that on many occasions there have been cases where criticism has gone beyond the scope of personal murder.

Earlier, the film industry was moving forward from the income that was being received only from the theatre. With the advent of OTT, many leading actors started making their own films. Suresh Kumar also said that if the content of the movie is good, people will come to the theater again. Maniyanpilla Raju said that 80s was the period when Malayalam cinema excelled in terms of story, direction and technology. He also said that Malayalam cinema is doing well in the Indian film industry today.

Kamal said that many films were released in Malayalam in the 80s that caught the attention of the audience. Every quarter of a century, there are big changes in Malayalam cinema. Kamal also pointed out that the eighties were the time when actors like Mammootty, Mohanlal and Nedumudi Venu contributed. The changes in the Malayalam film industry started with the films of Padmarajan, Bharathan and KG George. Suresh Kumar stated that Priyadarshan’s film Poochkoru Mookutthi opened a new path for comedy films.
