Referees England and Cook Replaced in Premier League Matches Following Controversial VAR Decision

The England Referees Committee announced – today, Sunday – that referees Darren England and Dan Cook have been replaced in two matches in the current round of the English Premier League, after they were responsible for managing the video assistant technology in the match between Tottenham and Liverpool.

The match that was held yesterday, in which Tottenham won 2-1, saw the referee cancel a valid goal for Liverpool at the behest of the video assistant technology on the pretext of offside on Colombian Luis Diaz, the Reds striker.

Liverpool played with 9 players after Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off, before an own goal scored by Joel Matip in stoppage time sealed the win for Tottenham.

Liverpool thought they had taken the lead when Luis Diaz received Mohamed Salah’s pass and shot into the far corner, but the referee ruled it out for offside.

The Referees Association issued a statement on Saturday evening blaming “major human error” for canceling Diaz’s goal, noting, “This was a real and clear error. The goal should have been awarded with the intervention of the video assistant referee.”

In a statement issued today, Sunday, the League said, “It was decided to replace Darren England, the video assistant referee in the Tottenham match against Liverpool, and Dan Cook (his assistant) in the same match in the matches between Nottingham Forest against Brentford and Fulham against Chelsea (the first was played today and the second will be played tomorrow).

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp expressed his anger at the referees’ decisions, whether not counting Diaz’s goal or expelling two of his team’s players.

Klopp said, “(Diaz’s) goal was offside. This is not offside when you see it. The referees drew the lines incorrectly. The ball is between Mohamed Salah’s feet. They did not correctly estimate the timing of the ball leaving Salah’s feet.”

He added, “We scored an own goal, and this is really difficult to accept. In the first expulsion, Curtis had the ball and lost it. It’s not a bad intervention. It looks different in the slow replay. He runs after the ball at full speed. This is unfortunate. First warning (for Jota) “He didn’t deserve to be booked. Then he got the second, and defending with 8 players is difficult.”
