Referee Deniz Aytekin apologizes for mistakes

The Bundesliga between Freiburg and Mainz ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Freiburg was behind for a long time – and that was due to a referee error that shouldn’t happen again because of the video evidence.

It was the 31st minute of the Bundesliga game between Freiburg and Mainz when FSV player Aaron put a cross in front of the goal. Dominik Kohr heads on goal, Freiburg keeper Marc Flekken can only let the ball bounce off. The ball then bounces into the hand of Alexander Hack from Mainz, Flekken saves again before Hack pushes the ball over the line in the second attempt.

“Have checked the handball”

The goal counts according to video analysis, FSV Mainz 05 leads 1-0 at SC Freiburg. But what is special about this scene? Referee Deniz Aytekin reveals after the game on Sky: “We actually checked the handball. The ball came down from above and the focus was completely on the handball when we accepted the ball.”

But that’s not the only offense in this scene. What matters is what happens before handball. Because after the cross at the time of Kohr’s header, goal scorer Hack is offside. After that, there is no new game situation, which is why the goal should not have been awarded. “It slipped through, that’s annoying,” says Aytekin, taking on the same responsibility as video referee Sascha Stegemann.

In the end, the sports club saved a point in the 1-1 draw against Mainz despite the referee’s error. “Such mistakes can happen. It would only have been annoying if we had lost as a result,” says SC coach Christian Streich fairly.
