Referee beaten, ice hockey player banned for 13 months

He hit the linesman with a stick. A reckless move that cost him dearly captain of Hc Bressanone, Nicholas Pezzettawho will not be able to play until November 29, 2025. This is the record disqualification in Italian ice hockey.

Beaten to the calf of the linesman

In an Italian Hockey League match (series B), Pezzetta hit the linesman in the calf with a stick during a phase of the game against Appiano. The referee then fell in pain on the icy rink. According to the sports judge of the Italian Ice Sports Federation it is an “intentional injury or, at least an attempt to injure”, cases which both involve the fixed-term suspension with a minimum of one year or disbarment.

Unjustifiable behavior

According to the sports judge, “there is no recognizable cause for justification” against the player, also because he considered that the blow with the stick was “inflicted voluntarily”. The sanction was aggravated by a further month’s disqualification because the foul was committed by the captain. In the last 30 years in Italian hockey, at Serie A and B level, so many months of disqualification for disciplinary reasons have never been inflicted.
