Reese Witherspoon to Develop Legally Blonde Spinoff TV Series at Amazon MGM Studios

Reese Witherspoon, in collaboration with her company Hello Sunshine, is set to develop a spinoff TV series based on the popular “Legally Blonde” film franchise, exclusive sources have revealed to Deadline. The project is currently in the works at Amazon MGM Studios, with one spinoff being written by the creators of “Gossip Girl,” Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and the possibility of a second series also being explored in the preliminary stages. The original “Legally Blonde” film, released in 2001, starred Reese Witherspoon in the lead role and became a cultural phenomenon, generating a sequel and a direct-to-video spinoff. The franchise has a dedicated fanbase eagerly awaiting the upcoming “Legally Blonde 3” film, co-written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor.

Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine, along with Amazon MGM Studios, has been actively working on expanding the “Legally Blonde” TV universe since the acquisition of the MGM library by Amazon. The collaboration with Witherspoon was a natural choice in order to leverage the existing intellectual property. The spinoff series is being spearheaded by Hello Sunshine, Fake Empire, and Amazon MGM Studios, with Schwartz, Savage, Witherspoon, and producer Marc Platt all serving as executive producers. The premise of the spinoff being developed by Schwartz and Savage is being kept under wraps for now.

The original “Legally Blonde” film is based on the novel by Amanda Brown and follows the journey of Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, as a Harvard Law student. The movie, released in 2001, propelled Witherspoon into superstardom and soon gained a cult following. This led to the release of a sequel, “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” in 2003. Additionally, a direct-to-video spinoff titled “Legally Blondes” was produced in 2009, originally conceived as a pilot for a potential TV series. With the growing popularity of the franchise, the highly anticipated “Legally Blonde 3” film has been in development for several years, now co-written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor.

The creators and executive producers of the spinoff, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, are known for their work on series like “Gossip Girl,” “Nancy Drew,” and “Dynasty.” They are represented by WME. Hello Sunshine, in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, recently produced the critically acclaimed limited series “Daisy Jones & the Six” for Amazon Prime Video. Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine are represented by CAA and attorney Gretchen Rush, with Witherspoon also being associated with LBI Entertainment.
