(dpa) – The Democratic incumbent Bill de Blasio remains mayor of New York for another four years. Around 65 percent of voters in the metropolis gave the 56-year-old their vote on Tuesday (local time), according to preliminary figures from the electoral authority. the Republican challenger Nicole Malliotakis landed in second place with almost 30 percent of the votes, far behind were several independent candidates.
Big promises
The result was the “beginning of a new era,” de Blasio promised via the short message service Twitter after the election results became known. “You’ve seen significant changes in the past four years, but that was nothing,” he wrote. “I’m more optimistic than ever. We’re just getting started.“

His election victory was also a “message to the White House,” de Blasio continued. “You can’t go against New York values and win, Mr. President. If you turn your back on the values of your hometown, your hometown will turn its back on you.”

The Republican US President Donald Trump comes from the New York borough of Queens. According to US media reports, he cast his vote by post. Trump once called de Blasio the “worst mayor in America” on Twitter.
Not unreservedly popular
Even with the New Yorkers, de Blasio is not particularly popular, but accepted. The Democrat, who is ranked on the left wing of his party, has the support of many donors and unions. A free year of kindergarten is counted among his achievements. However, other campaign promises, such as reducing the number of homeless people and increasing the supply of affordable housing, have not yet been fulfilled.
