London –
Chelsea officially got Reece James as its new captain. James replaced Cesar Azpilicueta, who left to join Atletico Madrid.
The England international right-back has been affiliated with Chelsea since he was six in the academy. James made his senior Blues debut in 2019.
During four seasons with Chelsea, Reece James has made 147 appearances with a contribution of 11 goals and 20 assists. The 23-year-old player has helped Chelsea win three trophies: the Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup.
Reece James will wear the Chelsea captain’s armband for the first time away against Liverpool this weekend. “I am very pleased to be able to take on this role and responsibility,” he said on the club’s official website.
“I know I have a big responsibility because we’ve had important captains in the past, but I’m excited.”
“I’ve been at Chelsea most of my life. I started here when I was six years old and coming through the academy through the academy was tough. But to be able to progress and then become captain is a great feeling for me and for my family.” straightforward Reece James.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed the decision to appoint Reece James as the new captain. “He is a role model and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been very clear this pre-season,” said the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain boss.
“He was very proud to wear the captain’s armband during our summer tour and will take on the challenge of leading our squad with his approach and ideas,” Pochettino added.
