Washington: After OPEC announced it will cut oil production, US President Joe Biden announced it will review relations with Saudi Arabia, according to White House security spokesman John Kirby. A coalition of oil producers led by Saudi Arabia has announced it will side with Russia to cut production. The decision to cut oil production by two million barrels a day starting in November has angered the White House. Biden’s response follows.
Kirby said Biden is disappointed with OPEC’s decision and is willing to work with Congress on the future of Saudi relations. Kirby added that the issue is not just about the war in Ukraine, but about America’s national security interests. Following the OPEC announcement, Democratic chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, called for a freeze on cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including arms sales.
