Well, it’s not going to be fun and you won’t make friends, but there are enough people for that. Bit the de-facto solution in the extreme commercial companies.
I think it’s that fear that makes us just not try. I read again that it concerns different systems, so that is in principle ideal for a phased transition.
You probably shouldn’t try to transform the old systems into new ones, but look at the requirements and start with a clean slate.
*I am well aware that the old applications patched many years of exceptions and rare bugs, that is indeed a risk, but of course this is not a sustainable situation. I think it is better to invest heavily in the short term with a lot of (external) hiring, and then save in the long term. And I say that after I have experienced something like this myself with all the misery that entails.
