Reducing Accidents and Costs: The Advantages of Complete Road Blocking for Repair Work

◀ Anchor ▶

When repairing old roads, some lanes are usually blocked.

As a result, there are many dizzying accidents, especially on highways.

Recently, experts have suggested blocking the entire road as an alternative, rather than just blocking some areas.

It is said that not only the risk of accidents but also the construction period and cost can be greatly reduced.

Reporter Taeyeon Han covered the story.

It is near the Namgimcheon Interchange on the Central Inland Expressway.

The concrete road that opened 20 years ago was dug up here and there.

It takes three days to dig up and cover a single 2km section.

Cars pass right next to the construction site without even slowing down, making it dizzy just standing there.

″Because vehicles are speeding by (next to the work space), both users and workers are exposed to the risk of traffic accidents while working… ″

On average, the number of cases where lanes are partially blocked and construction is carried out in this way exceeds 100,000 each year.

This means that the road is deteriorating.

The number of traffic accidents occurring during construction is increasing every year.

Last year, there were 65 accidents that occurred at maintenance workshops, a 2.3-fold increase compared to 2018.

The average number of deaths per year for five years was 10.

Of these, 3.6 are workers and 6.4 are drivers.

Among the highways in Korea, the section that is over 30 years old is currently 328km.

In 2030, it will increase 3.1 times to 1,012 km, and in 2040, it will increase 9.2 times to 3,017 km.

The number of structures such as highway bridges that are over 30 years old will also increase 9.5 times from about 800 currently to about 7,900 in 2040.

Repair work is bound to increase accordingly.

Since blocking a portion of the lane is not enough, a complete blocking method that is safer and reduces time and cost is being proposed as an alternative.

″In the case of such a complete renovation, it can be seen that it is much more advantageous in terms of effectiveness and economic feasibility to completely block the road in a short period of time and carry out intensive repairs rather than partially block it and carry out individual lanes.″

In fact, the Korea Expressway Corporation completely blocked 18km one way from the Nami Junction to the Ochang Junction of the Jungbu Expressway last June and carried out repair work.

The construction period, which would have taken 72 days if partial blocking work had been carried out, was completed in five days.

Reduced project costs, including construction costs, accidents, and expenses, are estimated at 1.6 billion won.
