Fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of a person’s lifestyle and health: we consume a lot of vegetables every day and they are rich in many of the nutrients we need every day.
These nutrients can help us maintain our health and prevent us from contracting many diseases.
A new study published at Delta State University in Abraca, Nigeria indicated that eating onions can help reduce blood sugar levels by 50 percent, according to the Times of India website.
What does the study say?
People with type 2 diabetes are unable to make enough insulin from the pancreas to regulate blood sugar, but taking onion extract can not only significantly lower blood sugar, but also lower high cholesterol levels.
– Results:
Lead author of the study, Dr Anthony Auger, of Delta State University, said, “Onions are inexpensive, available and used as a supplement, which has the potential to be used in the treatment of diabetic patients.
The researchers tested the theory on mice: 3 groups of diabetic mice were given different doses of onion extract to see if it would enhance the drug’s effect.
The doses were 200 mg, 400 mg and 600 mg per kilogram of body weight.The researchers also gave the drug and onions to 3 groups of non-diabetic mice with normal blood sugar levels.
The study found that among the diabetic mice, mice given 400 mg and 600 mg per kilogram of body weight “severely reduced” blood sugar levels by 50 percent.
Additionally, eating onions reduced the total cholesterol level in diabetic mice, with 400 mg and 600 mg having a greater effect.
The study also indicated that its consumption led to weight gain in non-diabetic mice, but not in diabetic mice.
