It would be a shame to reduce Suzanne Vega to her hits that looped on the FM bands of the 1990s. Born in 1959 in California, this New Yorker by adoption grew up in Spanish Harlem, headquarters of Latin American immigration where all the music of the continent resonates.
She tried several aesthetics, experimented with electro sounds and even played a significant role in the creation of the first MP3! Over the decades, Suzanne Vega has chiselled a clear and elegant folk with jazz accents (let’s not forget that she was signed by the legendary Blue Note record company in the 2000s).
The big apple never sleeps
Anti-bling-bling, friend of Lou Reed, the singer likes to tell slices of life from album to album, whether it is that of the famous little Luka, victim of the violence of his family and the silence of his neighbors, of daily of a coffee in Tom’s Diner or even the murky portrait of Marlene on the Wall – Dietrich. However, the main character of Suzanne Vega’s folk music remains her city, New York, the city that never sleeps.
It belongs entirely to its jazz and rock scene, sings of its inhabitants and its streets, features it in albums dedicated to it. New York never leaves Suzanne Vega and allows us to look at her differently.
