According to principal investigator Kate Trinajstic of Curtin University in Perth, the discovery is remarkable because the soft tissues of prehistoric species, unlike teeth and bones, are rarely well preserved. The fact that the organs have been preserved in three dimensions makes it even more exceptional. “We were really surprised,” Professor Trinajstic said in a press release.
