Rede D’Or is a leader in ESG practices in Brazil

Rede D’Or, the largest private healthcare company in Latin America, advanced in incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria in 2015, with the publication of its first Sustainability Report, audited since 2020 by a third party, following the guidelines of the main global sustainability reporting standards, such as GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) and SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board).

Since then, the company has led sustainable businesses in the healthcare sector, with initiatives that improve resource efficiency in 73 hospitals and 54 oncology clinics across the country. Below, find out which achievements and results obtained in the three ESG pillars enable Rede D’Or to achieve a more sustainable operation each year.

Award-winning environmental management

As a signatory to the United Nations (UN) Global Compact since 2020, Rede D’Or adhered to the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Of the total of 17 SDGs, the company initially committed to achieving goals in five objectives considered priorities. In the 2022 materiality study, the company started to prioritize three more objectives, and of the total of eight, the ones most strongly related to the ESG theme are: SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production; and SDG 13 – Action Against Global Climate Change.

In September 2022, with the approval of the Board of Directors, Rede D’Or approved its ESG Strategic Planning, with socio-environmental goals to be met by 2030, including a 36% reduction in relative greenhouse gas emissions ( GHG). Furthermore, as a participant in the Race to Zero global campaign to mitigate climate change, it has committed to zero net carbon emissions by 2050.

The company has also implemented an energy efficiency program in its units, started joining the Free Energy Market (MLE), with the goal of reaching 74 business units operating with renewable energy sources by 2025, and invests in a water efficiency to guarantee a 10% reduction in water consumption in all units participating in the project by 2024.

The result of a partnership with the state government of Rio de Janeiro, Rede D’Or, through the D’Or Institute of Public Health, is responsible for managing the Hospital Estadual da Criança (HEC), in the west zone of Rio, which ends of turning 10 years old. A reference in highly complex pediatric care in orthopedics, transplants and cancer treatment, the hospital has already carried out more than 200,000 outpatient consultations, around 48,000 surgeries and more than 250 transplants, in children and adolescents aged zero to 19.

By aligning ESG initiatives within the organization, Rede D’Or has received national and international awards and recognition, including: Best of ESG by Exame magazine; Most Admired Brands in Brazil – Band News; Value 1000 category

Medical services; MSCI ESG Ratings; Top Performer 2022 Epimed Solutions; 100 Most Influential in Health; grade “B” in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) – a global organization that assesses environmental impacts on corporations.

In 2020, with the Initial Public Offering (IPO), Rede D’Or became part of the Novo Mercado, a select group of publicly traded companies with the highest level of corporate governance on the Brazilian Stock Exchange. This means that, voluntarily, Rede D’Or chose to adhere to the strict governance practices suggested by B3, such as: presence of 20% of independent directors on the Board of Directors; Compliance requirements and implementation of Internal Audit, among others.

One year after going public, in recognition of its sustainable management model, the company was selected to join the 2023 portfolio of B3’s Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE), the main sustainability indicator of Brazilian companies listed on the Stock Exchange .

In the social pillar, Rede D’Or is at the forefront of important inclusion projects, such as the partnership with Instituto Proa, which offers opportunities for the professional development of more than 900 young people from public schools across the country.
