Red Sox Draft Picks: Status and Bonus Pool Update

Red Sox Draft Picks: Negotiations Underway

The Boston Red Sox have made their selections in the 2022 MLB Draft, but as of now, many of their picks have not yet agreed to terms. The team has until July 25 to come to agreements with their draft selections.

The Red Sox had a total bonus pool of $10,295,100 to work with for their picks. Their first-round selection, Kyle Teel, a catcher from Virginia, has not yet agreed to terms. Teel was picked 14th overall, and his slot value is $4,663,100.

In the second round, the Red Sox selected Nazzan Zanetello, a shortstop from Christian Brothers College High School in Missouri. Zanetello has also not yet agreed to terms. His slot value is $1,698,000.

The third-round pick, Antonio Anderson, a shortstop from North Atlanta High School in Georgia, has not yet agreed to terms either. Anderson’s slot value is $846,800.

The Red Sox have several more picks in the later rounds who have not yet agreed to terms, including Ryan Ammons, Nelly Taylor, Max Carlson, Cade Feeney, Jojo Ingrassia, Phoenix Call, Isaac Stebens, Dylan Schlaegel, Zach Fogell, Stanley Tucker, and Robert Orloski.

The team did manage to sign a few players below their slot values. CJ Weins, a right-handed pitcher from Western Kentucky, signed for $50,000, well below his slot value of $320,200. Caden Rose, an outfielder from Alabama, signed for $150,000, saving the team money to put towards other picks. Trennor O’Donnell, a right-handed pitcher from Ball State, also signed for $50,000, and Blake Wehunt, a right-handed pitcher from Kennesaw State, signed for $100,000.

The Red Sox will continue negotiations with their remaining picks in the coming days. Each pick in the first 10 rounds comes with an assigned value, and the total for a team’s selections determines what they can spend without incurring a penalty. If a player taken in the top 10 rounds doesn’t sign, his pick’s value gets subtracted from the team’s pool.

Teams that exceed their bonus pool face penalties, including taxes and the loss of future draft picks. The Red Sox will be looking to come to agreements with their remaining picks while staying within their bonus pool.

The Red Sox will have until July 25 to finalize contracts with their draft selections.

What factors are taken into consideration during negotiations between draft picks and their respective teams?

Catcher from the University of Virginia, was chosen with the 18th overall pick. As of now, negotiations with Teel are still ongoing, but both sides remain optimistic about reaching a deal.

Teel, known for his defensive prowess and ability to hit for power, is considered a promising prospect for the Red Sox. However, the team will need to offer him a competitive signing bonus in order to secure his commitment.

In addition to Teel, the Red Sox have 19 other draft picks from various rounds and positions. Negotiations with these players are also underway, as the team hopes to sign all of their selections and add them to their farm system.

It is common for draft picks to take some time before reaching agreements with their respective teams. Factors such as signing bonuses, player development plans, and financial considerations often come into play during negotiations.

The July 25 deadline adds a sense of urgency for both the Red Sox and their draft selections. If a player does not sign by this date, they will retain their college eligibility and have the option to re-enter the draft in future years.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, the Red Sox remain optimistic about their draft class and the potential impact these players could have on the organization. The team has a strong track record of developing young talent, and they are confident that they will be able to get deals done with their draft picks.

As negotiations continue, fans will eagerly await news of signings and the addition of new prospects to the Red Sox organization. The draft serves as an important opportunity for teams to replenish their talent pool and secure future talent, and the Red Sox are determined to make the most of it.
