TORONTO — Xander Bogaerts had two runs, starting pitcher Michael Wacha was solid for six innings of work and the Boston Red Sox snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1 .
Bogaerts had four of 13 hits for the Red Sox (8-11), which won only the second time in eight games. Rafael Devers and JD Martinez each had two hits.
Wacha (2-0) allowed four hits, two walks and one earned run. He struck out five batters.
The Jays (12-7) had just five hits in the game. This is the second defeat of the formation of the Queen City in their last eight meetings.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. allowed Tyler Heineman to cross home plate in the third inning. That was the Blue Jays’ only point.
Blue Jays starter Ross Stripling struck out seven batters, allowed five hits and allowed one earned run in five innings.
The Red Sox were counting on the return of their manager, Alex Cora. He missed the last six games due to COVID-19. The Massachusetts squad went 1-5 in his absence.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow. Alek Manoah is expected to start for the Jays and will face Garrett Whitlock.
The Blue Jays will have the chance to tie a team record when the Houston Astros visit Canada for a three-game series.
The Blue Jays are already assured of not losing the series of four games against the Red Sox. With five unbeaten streaks to start the season, they could tie the 1992 mark if they win the one against the Astros.
