Red Sox beat Tigers; sweep the series

BOSTON (AP) — Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the third inning and the Boston Red Sox swept their third series of the season, beating the Detroit Tigers 6-2 on Wednesday.

Jarren Duran and Alex Verdugo added two-run doubles apiece for Boston, which won the eighth of 10 meetings. Michael Wacha (6-1) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts to help the Red Sox improve to eight games over .500, their best season mark.

Javier Báez hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who have lost nine of 11 games.


Tarik Skubal (5-5) pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He has lost his last three starts.

Báez gave the Tigers the lead in the first, hitting a Wacha fastball that sent the seats over the “Green Monster”. It was his sixth home run of the season and he extended his hitting streak to seven games, one night after he came within a double of completing the cycle.

For the Tigers, Puerto Rican Báez 3-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. Venezuelans Víctor Reyes 4-0, Miguel Cabrera 4-1 and Harold Castro 4-0.

For the Red Sox, Puerto Rican Christian Vázquez 4-2 with a run scored. The Mexican Verdugo 4-1 with two RBIs.
