Red Sox beat Blue Jays 2-1 with just 3 hits

BOSTON (AP) — Connor Wong drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 Tuesday night despite being limited to three hits.

Kiké Hernández and Trevor Story hit back-to-back doubles in the third for Boston.

Zack Collins homered for the Blue Jays off starter Nathan Eovaldi.

Wong was called up from the minors on Monday to replace catcher Kevin Plawecki, who was placed on the COVID-19 list. Ninth in the batting order against right-hander Yimi Garcia (0-1), Wong hit a fly ball to right field that scored Bobby Dalbec, who led off the inning on an error by shortstop Bo Bichette.

It was Bichette’s second error of the game, and his first two of the season.

Hansel Robles (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit in relief, earning the win. Garrett Whitlock turned the ninth inning immaculate and had his first save of the season.

For the Blue Jays, Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. 4-0. Dominicans Raimel Tapia 4-0 and Santiago Espinal 4.0.

For the Red Sox, Puerto Rican Hernández 3-1 with a run scored. The Dominican Rafael Devers 4-0.
