Frigate of the German Navy, which participates in the international operation for the protection of navigation in Red Seanearly shot down – by mistake – an American unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), German reports said today.

Germany’s defense ministry confirmed that there was an incident on Monday with an allied country’s UAV, without naming it.

The Hessen (F221) frigate opened fire when it failed to identify the drone, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, adding that the UAV was “not hit”. The German Ministry of Defense pointed out that the Hessen frigate had not been informed by the allies about the presence of an unmanned aircraft in the area.

According to German magazine Der Spiegel, the UAV was an American MQ-9 Reaper. The publication emphasizes that the incident demonstrates the need for better coordination between the forces participating in the “Shields” mission in the Red Sea.

It is recalled that the Greek frigate “Hydra” is participating in the “Shields” operation in the Red Sea.
