As soon as the last daylight had disappeared from downtown Dresden on Monday evening, the windows of some shops lit up red. Numerous dealers took part in the “The city lives” campaign, including the Thalia – House of Books and the shops in the Altmarkt-Galerie.
The red light is meant to symbolize the danger traders see themselves in due to the lockdown. The participants demand a “trade-friendly corona policy” that makes openings possible while observing reasonable security measures. As an example, they cite faster vaccinations, mass rapid tests and the recognition of promising hygiene concepts. Otherwise they fear the extinction of shops, restaurants and cultural institutions in the inner cities of Germany, which cannot be reversed.
Under the motto “Life belongs in the center!”, The red light is intended to indicate the places where, without a political reaction, there could soon be no more shops. “We did well, but at some point all our reserves will be used up,” says Thalia.
