The health system in the northern Gaza Strip has been “shattered” by the war and hospitals are “totally non-functional”, the International Committee of the Red Cross said today.
“Repeated hostilities in and around hospitals have undermined the health system in the northern Gaza Strip, exposing civilians to the unacceptable risk of being deprived of vital treatments,” the ICRC said in its statement.
The ICRC demanded that medical infrastructure be protected, in accordance with international humanitarian law. “This protection is a legal obligation and a moral imperative to preserve human life,” he added, clarifying that hospitals are necessary for the sick or those injured by the conflicts.
Al-Awda Hospital, previously supported by the ICRC with medical supplies, is now under pressure as it is one of the few remaining health infrastructures in the northern Gaza Strip. The Indonesian Hospital and Kamal Antoine have been shut down.
On Friday and Saturday, Israel carried out a major military operation at the Kamal Antoine Hospital, the last major medical facility operating in the area. It is now “empty” and “defunct,” according to the World Health Organization.
“The influx of sick and displaced patients seeking refuge is creating a situation that medical staff cannot resolve,” the ICRC explained. “This increasingly dangerous situation is compounded by the lack of equipment, fuel, food and the possibility of specialized treatments,” he added.
However, the ICRC states that it is determined to support the health services, as far as possible, mainly by doing everything it can to ensure the protection of doctors and citizens’ access to treatments, as well as to facilitate the movement of personnel and the provision of medical equipment .
