On September 1, Herbert Wieser (55) took over the district management of the Red Cross in Lungau. He succeeds Manfred Goritschnig, who has successfully held this position since the beginning of 2016. Wieser brings with him extensive experience from the private sector and almost four decades with the Red Cross.
LUNGAU. Herbert Wieser, a native of Pongau, can look back on an impressive career. The trained master confectioner and baker worked for many years in senior management positions in the catering and retail sectors before turning his passion into a career and moving full-time to the Red Cross in November 2015. Wieser has been a volunteer with the Red Cross since 1983 and has held many different positions. Most recently, he was deputy head of “Migration” and responsible for the defibrillator service. In addition, he has been Chief of Staff of the Red Cross since 2010 and in this role is responsible for the successful management of many large-scale and disaster operations.
Goritschnig goes to Hallein
Wieser takes over a well-established rescue district from Manfred Goritschnig, who now works full-time as an emergency paramedic in the rescue service in his current home district of Hallein. He also continues his voluntary work as district rescue commander in Lungau.
Wieser: Many international and national aid missions
From his many years with the Red Cross, Herbert Wieser’s foreign missions stand out in particular. He was always there when it came to providing international aid. In 2010, for example, he was in Haiti after the devastating earthquake to help the people affected and to support the construction of the “Salzburg settlement” near the small town of Leogane. Other foreign missions took him to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Lithuania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Tanzania.
Return to the roots
Wieser is very much looking forward to his new task in Lungau:
“I have already held similar business management positions and would like to use this experience for the benefit of the Red Cross in Lungau.”
In addition to the professional motivation, there is also a personal motivation for him.
“I really like the land and the people in Lungau and part of my family originally comes from here. So I’m looking forward to returning to my roots,”
explains Wieser.
