The award recognizes individuals who have responded to an emergency in a way that saves lives while off duty or not in the scope of being a first responder or soldier. Fierro, who spent 15 years in the Army and retired as a major in 2013, is being hailed as a hero by witnesses and survivors of the shooting, the Colorado Springs police chief, the broader LGBTQ+ community, and even President Joe Biden. On the evening of the shooting, Fierro was joined by two others: U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas James and a trans woman who has not been publicly identified. The trio held down the suspected shooter, with Fierro punching the shooter in the face and the trans woman reportedly stomping the shooter’s face with her high heels.
