Red Bull Racing has reportedly opened talks with Sergio Perez to break open his contract, but negotiations are difficult. Red Bull wants from Max Verstappen make the clear number one in the team, but Pérez doesn’t like that. He wants equal treatment.

At the end of last year, Red Bull Racing announced that Pérez had won a one-year contract with the Austrian racing stable. From that moment on, he officially became the successor of Alexander Albon, which did not exhibit the desired level. Although Pérez is definitely doing better than his predecessor this season, the Mexican is also unable to match Verstappen’s level. However, Red Bull Racing wants to extend Pérez’s contract, although the man from Guadalajara will have to accept the role of second driver. And he doesn’t like this, reports the Spanish SoyMotor.

Pérez has included in his current contract that he will receive the same treatment as goldcrest Verstappen. But because Pérez cannot keep up with his teammate this season, Red Bull wants to use him as a permanent second man. He can also sign with the team from Milton Keynes, but with the role as second driver as a condition. And Pérez does not like that, according to paddock insider Mark Hughes of Motorsport Magazin, reports SoyMotor. Pérez wants the same treatment as Verstappen again, while Red Bull seems to prefer to use him for the Mercedessen and help Verstappen move forward.

Should Red Bull and Pérez not agree on a new contract, an interesting situation will arise on the grid. With Pérez and – probably also – Bottas, suddenly two capable drivers are available. This could turn out to be beneficial for Williams, then a worthy successor to George Russell can appoint. However, Red Bull would also have to look for a new driver, but they seem to first make an attempt at Pierre Gasly, which has been completely revived at AlphaTauri.
