Contrary to Mercedes and Ferrari, who opted for the possibility of driving without mileage restriction with an old model, Red Bull Racing preferred to use a distance limited to Silverstone to evaluate the new protocols but also to track a few new pieces for the first time.
The most obvious aspect of the advanced package that has been tested is none other than the hedgehog-like fins mounted at the flat bottom.
This is not a completely new solution as we have seen other teams use it in the past, as shown in the illustration of the Ferrari SF71H below.
However, it seems that Red Bull is now looking to exploit the advantage of working more in this area where there are also notches, which affects the air flow that escapes to the rear tires.
The team also seems to have worked on the shape, number and position of the fins located in front of the bargeboards (in the circle below), which modifies the behavior of the air flow in this area.
In addition, several slots have been added on the trailing edge of the upper fin at the pontoon level.
This suggests that these changes are all linked together to affect the air flow.
During taxiing, the team also controlled the flexibility and rotation of the front wing: a high-speed camera was aimed at the reference point of the front wing.
This is an important parameter for the stables, which are trying to go to the limit of what the regulations authorize concerning the incidence of aerodynamic loads in this area.
It remains to be seen how close this package is to the one that will be used by Red Bull for the Austrian Grand Prix, where Mercedes has already announced the introduction of new parts.
