Red Bull Racing sees the opportunity to protest against the front wing of Mercedes. According to CEO Helmut Marko, this is one of the most moving parts on the grid.
The Formula 1 championship will be fought on and off the asphalt this year. Red Bull Racing has to come up with a new rear wing design for the race weekend in France (Sunday, June 20), after Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona showed that it moved ‘extremely much’ on the straight. A (too) flexible rear wing ensures less air resistance, so that a higher top speed can be achieved.

In the meantime, several formations – with Mercedes as captain – have spoken out against the rear wing of the Austrian formation. In response, the FIA has decided to carry out more stringent tests from France. Red Bull Racing will therefore have to adjust the design somewhat. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, however, has announced that he may protest against the team from Milton Keynes in Baku. The Austrian does not think it is fair that Red Bull Racing can still use the rear wing during the race weekend in Azerbaijan.

However, the whole thing has raised another point of discussion: the forewings. This seems to move very much at Mercedes itself. “We expect that the tests for the front wings will now also be made more rigorous,” said Marko F1 Insider. “That’s fair. Especially the front wing of the Toto Wolff team is wobbling enormously. There is absolute potential to protest.”
