Red Bull not weakened by Honda departure: “In reality, nothing changes”

It is exactly that question that Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko is presented by the Italian sports newspaper The Gazzetta dello Sport: “You will appear without Honda at the start in 2022, is that a weakness?”

The Austrian counters that question with a reassuring answer: “No, because in reality nothing changes. Honda continues to build engines for us, with the difference that we now have to pay for them. And this construction was only possible if that was accompanied by the freezing of the development of the F1 engines (so that Red Bull does not fall behind, ed.).”

When will Red Bull Powertrains be operational?

Ultimately, Red Bull will run the entire engine department itself with the newly founded Red Bull Powertrains. The Honda engines will then be maintained in-house, while it could start building its own engines with a view to 2026.

But when will that branch of Red Bull become fully operational? Marko gives a cautious answer: “For now let’s just say that that will happen next summer.”
