Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner wants to have clarity about the engine that his team will use in 2022 before the end of November. Because Honda is leaving Formula 1 after 2021, Red Bull has to look for an alternative power source.
It is unlikely that Mercedes or Ferrari will supply engines to a major competitor, while Max Verstappen’s team had much to complain about the unreliable Renault engine in the past. However, Horner says he is looking at other alternatives and wants to know where his team stands as soon as possible.
“I understand that motor issues take a lot of time, but by the end of this month we need to have a grip on our situation from 2022,” quotes Motorsport the 46-year-old Briton, who states that talks are already being held.
“Behind the scenes we do have constructive conversations with commercial rights holders, and also with several directors. But there are some important things to be settled before we can make further statements about our plans in the motor field.”
For Horner, ‘freezing’ further development with the Honda engine is also a serious option. This would allow Red Bull to continue to drive with a Honda engine after 2021, although the Japanese company will no longer deliver updates.
“Ideally, we would like to continue in 2022 with the engine that we already have in our car next year, but with a different sticker on it. If we can make a deal about taking over those power sources and the intellectual properties, then It would be a shame if those bikes end up in a warehouse somewhere in Japan. It is entirely up to the regulations, but we would like to continue on this foot. “
