Red Bull and Honda reach agreement on engine takeover: “Now depends on the FIA”

Red Bull Racing and Honda have reached an agreement on the acquisition of the Japanese power source, Helmut Marko reports. The Austrian says it now depends on the FIA.

These are crucial days for the Austrian formation. After Honda announced during the 2020 season that it would retire from Formula 1 after 2021, it quickly became clear that Red Bull Racing had no intention of working with another supplier. They no longer saw the prospect of being a customer team and therefore wanted to take over the intellectual properties from Honda, so that from 2022 onwards, embroidery on the Japanese horsepower could continue. Both parties have now reached an agreement. Red Bull Racing may continue to use the Honda power source after 2021.

However, this plan still has a number of snags. To make this profitable for Red Bull Racing, the formation wants the engine development to be frozen until the introduction of the new engine regulations (2025 or 2026). The team does not have the resources to further develop a power source itself. “Everything is round between us and Honda,” Marko tells Car, motor and sport. “But we won’t have a case until we have written evidence from the FIA that the engine freeze is coming. We are waiting for a decision from the FIA. More clarity should be forthcoming next week.”

For Red Bull Racing it is almost a matter of time. Since the arrival of the new year, work may be done on the 2022 car, but in Milton Keynes they are not yet sure about which power source the chassis should be built around. However, a plan B does not have the formation. If Formula 1 fails to find a mechanism where the other manufacturers: Ferrari, Renault in Mercedes – agree, a difficult situation arises: “Then Red Bull will have to drastically reconsider its Formula 1 participation. That is not blackmail. Plan B does not exist,” said the Red Bull CEO.
