More than 50% of sexually active women experience at least one episode of UTI in their lifetime. Of these, almost a quarter experience recurrent UTIs, i.e. at least 3 episodes of infection in a year.
Urinary tract infections are more common among women and especially among those who are sexually active. This can be explained by the way the urethra is positioned in women. It is located closer to the rectum and is therefore more prone to colonization with bacteria, usually E.coli, especially after sexual contact. Here, then, is the reason why doctors always recommend urinating after sex – to clean the urethra of possible bacteria.
However, if the urinary infections recur frequently, it is a case of more thorough analyses, possibly also of an ultrasound to bring additional clarifications regarding the reason for the recurrences of the urinary infections.

Why urinary infections recur
There are two important mistakes in the case of urinary infections:
- taking antibiotics (either taking the wrong medicine or not taking it for the full recommended duration)
- administration of natural remedies (these help to relieve the symptoms, but not to eliminate the cause)
In both cases, when such treatments are taken without a doctor’s recommendation, urinary infections will return, because it is possible to produce only the temporary disappearance of the symptoms, not the eradication of the cause.
A study recently published in the journal Nature Microbiology however, it shows that recurrent UTIs could alter the DNA of the epithelial cells that line the urinary tract. Thus, the cells shrink and begin to show “defects”, which triggers an immune response that predisposes to the recurrence of urinary infections, the scientists explain.
Consequently, the more episodes of urinary infection a woman has, the more likely the treatment will not produce results, because the problem is at the cellular level.

Urinary tract infections: symptoms
Urinary tract infections are manifested by:
- discomfort and stinging when urinating
- sensation of very frequent urination
- a small amount of urine excreted
- in cases not treated in time, fever may also occur
The diagnosis is made by the specialist with the help of a urine sample and a urine culture – which gives clues about the type of antibiotic that should be used.

Natural remedies for urinary tract infections
Teas and other natural remedies used quite often are only adjuncts in the treatment of urinary infections, but their administration does not in any case really make the urinary infection disappear, which means that the problems reappear since they are not treated properly.
Even doctors recommend the administration of such adjunctive treatments (cranberry tea is the most common such remedy and the one with the best proven effectiveness), but not as a treatment in itself, but only as an adjunct.

The danger of repeated urinary infections in men
In men, urinary infections do not occur with the same frequency as in women, but they can cause prostate infections. These are called prostatitis and have the same symptoms as urinary infections: stinging, burning when urinating.
In the case of acute prostatitis, fever may occur. Statistically speaking, until the age of 45, prostatitis is almost the only urological problem in men.
Obviously, men also need to see a specialist doctor, especially since these repeated inflammations in their case can lead to male infertility.
Prostate hyperplasia or, simply put, prostatitis is a benign condition, but one that must be carefully monitored. Most of the time, it is not a serious condition, but it changes the patients’ lives, and not for the better, and this is because of the frequent urination of a small amount of urine.
The main cause for the appearance of prostatitis is age, therefore, there is no way to prevent it. However, a balanced lifestyle can delay the onset of unpleasant symptoms.

Water keeps urinary infections away
For both women and men it is important to remember a very simple aspect: a person who consumes a large amount of water is much less exposed to the risk of urinary infections.
Adequate and rigorous local hygiene and high water consumption are the ways in which urinary infections can be prevented. And that’s because, even if the microbe has been contracted, it can be eliminated from the urethra with the help of a large amount of water, especially in the case of women.
