Recurrence, the main enemy of ovarian cancer survivors

Ovarian cancer survivors should be checked every three months for the detection of recurrence.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairman of the Indonesian Oncology and Gynecology Association (HOGI) Dr. dr. Brahmin Askandar SpOG(K)-Onk said recurrence is the main enemy of ovarian cancer patients. Relapse also poses challenges after the treatment period.

“The main enemy ovarian cancer is a recurrence, because most of them are detected not in an early stage,” said Dr Brahmana in an online media discussion, Thursday (1/13/2022).

Dr Brahmin said, in those with cancer at an advanced stage, the recurrence rate reached 80 percent despite treatment. Treatment for recurrence will differ between patients. Some need chemotherapy, surgery before chemotherapy, or even targeted therapy.

“If there is a relapse, the treatment is very varied per person. Some are given chemotherapy, some are operated on before chemotherapy, some are undergoing targeted therapy. The doctor will determine with the team,” said the doctor who is a consultant gynecology oncology at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University.

Therefore, according to Dr. Brahmana, ovarian cancer patients who have completed treatment need to be monitored continuously. At least, they need regular check-ups with the doctor every three months to detect any complaints, new lumps, and so on.

“It needs to be monitored continuously, it can’t be done after surgery and chemotherapy is finished,” said the doctor who practices at Dr Seotomo Hospital and UNAIR Surabaya Hospital.

When doing a check-up with a doctor, ovarian cancer survivors can undergo a number of tests and imaging, such as CT-scan, MRI, and others to confirm a recurrence or not. Ovarian cancer is said to be one of the sillent killer because it does not have the typical symptoms felt by patients at an early stage.

Cancer can originate from the right or left ovary or both. The ovaries are small, about 2 cm. However, if there is a tumor or cancer, then the size can be 50 cm and sometimes even though the size is not large but spreads to other organs, such as the lungs.
