“Rector of Montpellier Reveals Procedures for Becoming a Teacher Amid Growing Shortage”

Faced with the growing lack of teachers, the Rector of Montpellier reveals the procedures for applying and becoming a teacher in the face of students who are mixed with the conditions offered.

As part of the campaign to open recruitment competitions for teaching staff and
education, Sophie Béjean, Rector of the Occitanie academic region and Philippe Augé, President of
the University of Montpellier exchanged with the students of the University of Montpellier in order to make better known the systems of initial training to become a professor or principal adviser of education and to encourage the students to register for the competitions.

And they announce the extension of registrations:

“What if you went to school with us?” This is how registration for the various National Education competitions was launched on October 18. It was to end on November 18.
Pap NDIAYE, Minister of National Education and Youth, has decided to extend this period
registration for competitions until December 2, 2022 to allow a maximum of candidates to register “, explains the rector.

Even if in the Academy of Montpellier, there is no urgency.

We are in an Academy which is attractive, last year, we filled up for the start of this year on the competition for school teachers, we had 316 positions and we recruited. Nevertheless, we have some disciplines in the professional path, ” completes the Rector.

The Rector recalled in particular the ministry’s commitments in favor of young teachers:

Remuneration of 2,000 euros net per month at the start of their career, personalized support throughout their career and its possible developments.

This extension concerns all competitions for which registration began on October 18, namely recruitment:

• Primary and secondary school teachers, education staff, psychologists
national education;
• Supervisory staff;
• Youth and sports personnel;
• Administrative, social, health and library staff.

Also concerned are registrations for professional grade advancement exams in the administrative stream and the library stream, which also opened on October 18, 2022.

And the Human Resources Department of the Academy to argue. More than half of French civil servants are part of National Education.

When you choose to get involved in the teaching sector, it’s exciting to contribute to the training of young people, but afterwards there are really rich and varied prospects for development. One is not necessarily a teacher for life, “explains Alma Lopez, HRD at the Academy of Montpellier.

Among the students present at the meeting, young people with an obvious vocation but who remain with a few concrete questions.

This is the job I always wanted to do. But I’m waiting for answers on the fact that we are on internship before our competition or the fact that we have no follow-up as a contract worker, “says this student.

Others are ready to change their tune with regard to the teaching profession.

I’m no longer motivated. The conditions are more and more difficult, the support is non-existent at the university as on the ground. Internships are no longer valued at all. It does not correspond to the vision I had of teaching before entering a master’s degree. The master’s is just redundant when we could prepare for professional life, ” confesses this other student present.

According to figures from the ministry, more than 4,000 positions, in the public and private sectors, have not been filled in the teacher competitions at the start of the 2022 school year.
