Recovering Limited Wood Resources after Forest Fires on the North Shore: Delays and Challenges

While forestry companies are still waiting for the green light from the government, it is clear that the quantity of recoverable wood after the forest fires on the North Shore will be limited.

In the Haute-Côte-Nord, only 10% of burnt surfaces can be recovered.

For example, Boisaco mentions that in its cutting area north of Labrieville, only 3,500 hectares can be recovered out of the 30,000 that have been ravaged by the fires.

Time is running out, according to the company. These logs must be harvested and processed before March 31, otherwise the insects will have caused too much damage.

For now, the logging company has still not agreed on a special plan to recover this wood with the government.

According to Boisaco, discussions are stalling with the Pessamit band council on the issue of protecting woodland caribou. What saddens the management of Boisaco is that the North Shore seems the only one to experience these delays with the government. In other regions affected by the spring forest fires, special plans for the recovery of burnt wood are already underway.

North of Baie-Comeau, Resolute Forest Products (RFP) does not expect to harvest a significant amount of timber, because the Outardes sector has generally been spared by forest fires. But in Sept-Îles, the Ministry of

Natural Resources and Forestry considers that no volume is recoverable by the forestry industry.
