Records beckon for Djokovic, who beats Zverev and reaches the US Open final

Novak Djokovic has qualified for the final of the US Open. In the semifinals, he defeated German Alexander Zverev in five sets: 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

That means Daniil Medvedev will face Djokovic in the final. Last night, the Russian qualified first for the final in New York. Medvedev convincingly defeated the young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets (6-4, 7-5, 6-2).

The duel between the number one in the world Djokovic and number two Zverev was exciting and to the delight of the 21,000 fans, Zverev forced a fifth set. He killed himself in that. He delivered his first serve after, among other things, two double errors and Djokovic rumbled on to 5-0. Zverev still struggled, but the damage was already done.

Record holder

The 34-year-old Djokovic reached a Grand Slam final for the 31st time, equaling the record number of Roger Federer. The Serb will play his ninth final in New York on Sunday, a record among the men.

“I’m going to put my heart, my soul, my body and mind into that match. I’m going to treat the next game like it’s the last game of my career,” Djokovic said immediately after his match against Zverev.

If Djokovic manages to win the tournament at Flushing Meadows, he will become the record holder with 21 grand slam victories. He currently has 20 Grand Slam victories, as many titles as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It also means that Djokovic can win all four Grand Slam tournaments in one calendar year. Australian Rod Laver, present in New York, was the last player to do so in 1969.
