biomass
Renewable sources also include biomass. Biomass stands for material of vegetable or animal origin and comes in all kinds of variants, such as maize, manure and food residues. But it also concerns, for example, wood chips that are co-fired in coal-fired power stations. This form of biomass in particular is controversial.
The Netherlands does not have enough residual wood from, for example, forestry and agriculture to meet all the need for biomass. For that reason, wood is also obtained from abroad. Environmental organizations therefore question the sustainability of the use of biomass.
Energieopwek.nl also includes biomass in the definition of ‘renewable sources’. The website uses a definition of UN climate panel IPCC.
