Record unemployment withdrawals in July: Consar

Mexico City. During July 2024, people who lost their formal jobs in Mexico withdrew a total of 3.07 billion pesos from their Retirement Fund Administrator (Afore), the highest figure for a month since records began (2005), according to data from the National Commission for the Retirement Savings System (Consar).

For the first time, according to historical data from the regulatory and supervisory body, the 3 billion pesos barrier was surpassed, leaving behind the previous record of 2.921 billion pesos registered in August 2023.

The more than 3 billion pesos that unemployed Mexicans were forced to withdraw from their respective individual accounts last July represents an increase of 36 percent compared to the 2.208 billion pesos in the same month last year.

As for the number of workers who made this decision that reduces their pension resources, according to data from Consar, this was 162,712 in the seventh month of 2024, an increase of 16 percent compared to the 140,825 who did so in June 2023.

In the year-to-date, that is, from January to July, partial withdrawals for unemployment benefit amount to a total of 17.922 billion pesos, an increase of 27 percent compared to the 14.1 billion pesos reported in the same period of the previous year.

They achieve capital gains

This Thursday, Consar also revealed that during July of this year, the 10 Afores operating in the country obtained capital gains (non-consolidated profits) for workers for 73,251 million pesos.

With this result, these financial institutions have accumulated a positive result of 225 thousand 868 million pesos so far this year and 434 thousand 639 million pesos in the last 12 months.
