A record held by Pelé was broken when Argentina legend Lionel Messi scored 644 goals for Spanish football club Barcelona.
Messi broke the record for most goals for one club. Pele scored 643 goals for Santos. There was also a story of stopping a civil war because of Pele. The incident occurred while Santos was on tour in Nigeria. War was suspended for 48 hours as a friendly match was played against Nigeria in Lagos. The game was tied at 2-2.
Pele scored both goals for Santos. The 1000th goal that the Brazilians always remember was scored on November 19, 1969. The story was born in the match between Santos and Vasco da Gama. The legendary star had just turned 30. After the defeat at the 1966 World Cup, Pele was no longer able to do this. Pele did not play in some qualifying rounds in 1969. After changing his mind, he played the match against Mexico and ensured Brazil’s World Cup qualification. A brawl with Bobby Moore, a sensational shot from midfield against Czechoslovakia and an antics to make the Uruguayan goalkeeper tremble are some of Pele’s “heroic deeds” at the 1970 World Cup. The image of Pele trying to header is also immortal Rivelino’s cross to score in the final against Italy. Brazil beat Italy 4-1 to win the World Cup.
