Record Snowfall and Extreme Cold: Russian Winter Weather Struggles

Like large parts of Europe, Russia is also struggling with extreme winter weather. The capital Moscow is experiencing a lot of inconvenience from a record amount of snowfall and heavy frost. In parts of Siberia the temperature even dropped to minus 50 degrees.

Moscow saw more snow than ever before, the Russian weather service reported. As a result, flights had to be canceled and roads became impassable. Temperatures in the capital will drop to 18 degrees below zero this week.

In the area around the city of Yakutsk, in northeastern Siberia, it became a lot colder than in Moscow. Temperatures of 48 degrees below zero were measured there.

In remote places in the Sakha region, of which Yakutsk is the capital, temperatures even dropped to more than 50 degrees below zero. Weather services expect it to become even colder in the near future.

Yakutsk is unofficially known as the coldest city in the world. The Sakha region is located almost entirely in a permafrost zone. This means that it freezes almost all year round. Temperatures of 50 degrees below zero have been rare in recent years, partly due to climate change.
