The Saint-Étienne customs service made a record seizure this Friday morning, since nearly 12 tonnes of counterfeit cigarettes were discovered in a truck registered in Latvia, which was traveling on the RN7 at La Pacaudière, about thirty kilometers north. north of Roanne.
A market value of several million euros for resale
The truck had been in the customs sights for some time. When it was checked on Friday morning, it was supposed to be carrying radiators bound for Germany. But, when customs officers opened the trailer, they discovered pallets containing counterfeit cigarettes.
“There are nearly 11.5 tons, which represents several tens of thousands of cartridges and millions of cigarettes” specifies the public prosecutor of Roanne Abdelkrim Grini. Or a market value of several million euros on resale. “The cigarettes bear the Super King brand, which suggests that they were intended for the English market,” continues the magistrate, rather satisfied with this decision and the work of the customs service.
The truck driver, a 46-year-old Latvian, was placed in customs detention for 24 hours. Before being placed in police custody in the customs offices of Saint-Étienne, under the authority of the Roanne prosecutor’s office, where he is being heard.
