Record Numbers of Travelers Depart for Labor Day Weekend Getaways

Starting today, thousands of passengers in our area are heading to airports and other transportation hubs to get out of the city and spend the holiday weekend with family or just enjoy one last trip before the end of summer.

Booking data from the AAA organization for flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises shows that Labor Day weekend travel is up from last year: domestic bookings are up 4% and international bookings are up 10%. 44%.

“Most travelers will be departing on the Thursday or Friday before Labor Day to take advantage of the long holiday weekend,” said Paula Twidale, AAA Travel senior vice president.

“Nationwide, the Pacific Northwest, big cities like New York and Denver, and tourist hotspots like Orlando and Las Vegas are the most popular. Internationally, everything revolves around Europe and Canada,” added Twidale, quoted by AAA.com.

Thursday was one of the busiest days of these days off at airports with more than 52,000 scheduled flights.

Many also travel by land, so on Thursday the peak of traffic was recorded between two and six at night.

The best times to travel by car over Labor Day weekend are in the early morning or late afternoon.

New York is among the five most preferred destinations to spend the holiday.
