New York City attracted a record 58.3 million tourists in 2015, 1.8 million more than in 2014, with international growth of 14% of Chinese tourists, authorities said Thursday. .
Of these tourists, 46 million came from the United States and 12.3 million from abroad, according to NYC & Company, the equivalent of the New York tourist board.
This is the sixth consecutive year of increase in the number of tourists to New York.
This increase mainly concerns visitors from the United States, which rose from 44.2 to 46 million. The number of international tourists is almost stable, from 12.2 million last year to 12.3 million this year.
Foreign tourists come, in order of importance, from the United Kingdom (1.19 million), Canada (1.07 million), Brazil (926,000) and China (852,000). The French, whose number was not immediately available Thursday, are ahead this year by the Chinese, up 14%.
Next come Australian, German and Italian tourists.
Mayor Bill de Blasio welcomed “this new stage” in “the safest and most exciting city in America”, stressing the power of attraction “of the five boroughs”.
New York now has almost 107,000 hotel rooms, about 6,000 more than last year. The number of overnight stays there increased by 4%, reaching 33.7 million in 2015, according to NYC & Company.
Among the novelties in 2015 in New York, the opening of the new Whitney Museum, that of the observatory of the new iconic tower of the World Trade Center WTC1, the transformation of the Ellis Island museum into a “national museum of immigration” and the reopening of the Kings Theater in Brooklyn.
The authorities also point out that the borough of Queens has been designated as the number 1 destination in the United States by the Lonely Planet guide.
