Record Number of Road Accidents and Increasing Death Toll in Bulgaria Raises Concerns

A record number of road accidents have occurred since the beginning of the year in the country. Compared to last year, the number of victims on the road is also higher, the black statistics show, BNT reported.

The reasons for this are that some of the new roads in the country are already compromised, which further increases the risk of accidents.

For the past year 2022, Bulgaria is in second place in Europe in terms of the number of victims on the road. The statistics will most likely continue, with the possibility that we may even climb to the top of the black statistics this year as the death toll rises.

20 more people have died in accidents since the beginning of the year compared to the past 2022. The statistics also show that there are more accidents during the day, but with fewer dead and injured, and 50% of accidents at night have victims .

“The transition from light to dark is the most sublime, the moment when the body and the eyes have to adapt from light to dark. At dusk. This is the moment when the worst road accidents occur, because it seems we are not prepared to reduce the speed, keep a distance, respect the restrictions, look around if the road is unfamiliar, where there are footpaths,” said Diana Stoyanova, a professional rally driver.

“If you take the state of our fleet, where we are the car morgue of Europe. The average age of the cars is 17-18 years, not good lighting. Adding to that, there are no markings on a large part of the roads, there are a lot of potholes and the results are there.” commented Vladimir Todorov, Association of Accident Victims.

The Institute of Roads and Bridges at the API conducted an inspection of 165 kilometers of roads in the country that are still under warranty. Four sections have established unevenness of the road, in seven road sections there is a discrepancy in the thickness of the asphalt.

However, hundreds of kilometers of road network in the country are littered with potholes, which together with reduced visibility and weather conditions during the autumn and winter season increase the risk of accidents.

“Infrastructure is categorically one of the leading causes of accidents. Emblematic examples of this are the accident in Svoge, where a bus fell with 20 people killed. There it was proven that the asphalt wearing layer had indicators that did not meet the requirements, accordingly slippage occurs “, added Vladimir Todorov.

“In most cases, we are always in a hurry, we want to get there sooner. When we are not prepared for potholes, it is a huge prerequisite for the car to jump, to have a serious accident. We must always be ready to slow down, smoothly. Avoid potholes as much as possible, but not to enter the oncoming lane, but rather to reduce our speed and even warn other road users,” said Diana Stoyanova, a professional rally driver.

Since the beginning of October, more than 30 people have died on the road. Some of them lost their lives because they obeyed the traffic rules, but others think that it won’t happen to them or they are just in a hurry. Therefore, the experts are adamant that the main thing to reduce the number of victims on the roads is to change the minds of the drivers, and then come the fines, penalties and confiscation of cars.
