From January to May, 921 reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) were made in the Netherlands. That is a record. Since the establishment of UFO Reporting Center Netherlands in January 2011, a total of 9,180 reports have been made.
Starlink
The reporting center has two explanations for the increase in the number of reports. The first is Starlink, the satellite network of the American space company SpaceX. This is a project by Elon Musk, for which mini-satellites are orbiting the Earth. “Sixty satellites will be launched into the sky at launch. This will produce a wisp of lights,” Alex Griffioen of UFO Meldpunt Nederland tells Editie NL.

Those lights are noticed by many people. “Since Musk’s project started, we have seen an increase in the number of reports. Sometimes we get as many as thirty reports in one day of the same phenomenon.”

What also contributes is the attention for UFOs in the United States. The United States Department of Defense released three videos of UFOs in April. “It has been widely publicized in the media. We have noticed that the topic has become more open to discussion. As a result, people are more likely to report.”
Less laughable
Griffioen notices that the tone in which the subject is discussed changes. “People are less laughing about it. You notice that in the tone of journalists during interviews, but also in the way people respond online to articles about UFOs.”

The majority of the reporters at UFO Reporting Center Netherlands believe that extraterrestrial life visits our planet. “We ask that with every report, and 52 percent say they believe in it. That number has remained constant over the years.”
