In its annual report, ISTAT stated that the population over 100 years old has tripled since the beginning of the century and reached almost 22,000 people in January of this year. Most of this number are women.

A look at the birth rate reveals that it has dropped to a historically low level of 393,000 in 2022. This is the lowest rate seen in more than 150 years.

The number of the country’s population has started to decrease significantly since 2014. One of Italy’s biggest challenges is caring for its rapidly growing elderly population.

In the period from 2020 to 2023, the average age in Italy also increased. Initially, it was 45.7 years, but now it has increased to 46.4 years. The institute predicts that the number of residents aged over 80 will also increase. It is thought that by 2041, six million inhabitants will be over 80 years old.
