“Record Number of New Hires in Care and Welfare in 2022 Despite Ongoing Staff Shortages”

175,000 people started a job in care and welfare in 2022. That is the largest number since the end of 2010. Nevertheless, the sector is still struggling with enormous staff shortages.

The influx of new employees in care and welfare has been increasing for the sixth year in a row. This is mainly because many students went to work in the sector after their studies. 88,000 new employees came from their training, the statistics office reports CBS.

There were also 43,000 returnees, people who had previously worked outside the healthcare sector for at least a year. In addition, there were 44,000 lateral entrants. What also helped is that the outflow of employees has been lower than the inflow since 2016.

There is still plenty of work in care and welfare. At the end of the first quarter of this year, 67,000 vacancies were open. That is three thousand more than a quarter earlier.
