Record number of Covid-19 cases in Tokyo / Article

The number of cases of the coronavirus Covid-19 per day in Tokyo has reached a new record – 4058, the city government announced on Saturday.

This is the first time since the beginning of a pandemic that the number of cases has exceeded 4,000 per day.

On Friday, the government extended the state of emergency in Tokyo until August 31 and extended it to other nearby prefectures.

The Japanese government’s chief Covid-19 consultant has warned of possible congestion in the health system, given the sharp rise in Covid-19 cases.

“Without a common awareness of the crisis, sooner or later the pressure on the health system will become more serious,” medical doctor Siger Omi warned at a parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday.

The increase is due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus delta variant.

Omi said that

The holiday season and the Tokyo Olympics are also contributing factors.

However, Tokyo Governor Juriko Koike said the increase in infections had nothing to do with the Olympics. She called on young people to be vaccinated, to stay at home and to follow up on Covid-19.
