In Estonia, several hundred people have recently been infected with Covid-19 every day. Last day, a new record was reached – 760 infected. Of these, 304 in Tallinn. Prior to that, the highest number of infections was registered on December 4, when the infection was confirmed in 560 people. Six deaths were also reported. The deceased is 68 years old. In total, the number of confirmed infections in Estonia has exceeded 17,700, and almost 150 people have died.

Virologist Irja Lutsāra has pointed out that today’s record number of infections is related to tests not announced in previous days. She emphasized that this number did not yet reflect the effectiveness of the new restrictions imposed today and that would be forthcoming, so it was necessary to wait before thinking again about other restrictions.

From today for three weeks, all leisure activities in the East Viru County will be suspended and public events will be banned, as well as the closure of various public institutions and other restrictions. On Monday, restrictions will be tightened throughout Estonia.

In the neighboring country of Lithuania, which has been hit hardest by the virus from the Baltic States, infection with the new coronavirus was confirmed to 3303 people last day, 886 of them in Vilnius. In a few hundred cases, the source of hatching cannot be traced. There were also 27 new deaths. Mostly elderly people have died.

In total, more than 90,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus in the country, and almost 800 people have died. A large proportion of infections have been found in nursing homes. Infections have also occurred in medical institutions, educational institutions, various companies, prisons and elsewhere. Hospitals currently treat more than 2,100 people, 190 of whom are in resuscitation, while fewer and fewer medical manuals are becoming available. Lithuanian media report that the restrictions introduced on Wednesday, which limit the number of parking spaces in supermarkets, do not seem to be working. There is a large flow of people in the parking lots of supermarkets, around them and in the shops themselves.

It should be noted that yesterday the program of the government of the new Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonīte was approved. Tighter quarantine measures are expected to curb the alarming spread of the new coronavirus. When the old government left, it was not ashamed to call for non-compliance in the difficult situation in which the state found itself, while the population blamed the government, stating that it had not adopted sufficiently strict and effective restrictions.
