Record number of 4,635 Belgians buy second residence in Spain

2021 ended at 3,458 Belgians who achieved a casa acquired in Spain. Last year, nearly 1,200 more were added. And that despite the rising prices as a result of more expensive building materials and the scarcity of properties – purchases are made even before a building permit is issued. “2022 was an absolute record year. In the more than 25 years that we have been active, we have never experienced this before,” says Leen Vermeulen of Hip Estates.

“It is clear that after the lockdowns during the corona pandemic, people decided to enjoy more. At the same time, working from home has become established and that is perfectly possible from Spain. It certainly plays a role in this that consumer prices in shops and restaurants are much lower than in Belgium. And the energy crisis was an extra argument to buy a second residence. With an average of six hours of sunshine a day, from November to February, the temperatures on the Spanish costas are very pleasant. As a result, houses need to be heated much less.”

By far the most popular area is the region around Alicante on the Costa Blanca, followed by the area from Mijas to Estepona on the Costa del Sol and the Canary Island of Tenerife. Every day there are several flights to these areas from Brussels, Antwerp, Ostend, Charleroi and Liège.
